Chengdu. as one of the most popular tourism cities in China, attracts numerous inbound tourists with its abundant tourism resources. Therefore, the quality of the translations of tourism texts plays an vital role of attracting tourists. Among the tourism texts. the English scenic spots introductions have direct influence on the communication of Chengdu culture. Due to the uncertainty of the skopos of translation, diversities of two cultures, and the abilities of translators, some errors and mistakes can be found in the English scenic spots introductions in Chengdu. These errors are the obstacles of the communication of Chengdu culture.In Skopos Theory, translation is regarded as a purposeful cross-cultural activity. which takes place in specific culture. Different purposes and intentions determine different translation strategies and methods. Guided by the Skopos Theory and text typology. translators should flexibly adopt different translation strategies and methods to ensure the translated text achieve the intended function.Under the guide of Skopos Theory and text typology, the author makes a comparison of the Chinese and English introductions. The differences existing in the thinking patterns, aesthetic conceptions, and expressions of two languages cause the differences of styles. structures and contents of two languages. These differences cause the failure to offer an informational content in target text. The English scenic spots introductions aim at offering information to tourists, which means the type of tourism text belong to content-focused text. In other words, the translation of the English scenic spots introductions should be oriented to source text; and the information should be presented fully and accurately in the form of the target language. Therefore. before beginning with a translation work. the translator should take the expectations of the target receiver into consideration. analyze the type of text and ascertain the purpose of the translation. During the translating process. the translator should adopt appropriate translation methods to offer a quality text which can achieve the purpose of attracting tourists and promoting Chinese culture.
