Since the middle decades of the 16^th century,research on meteorology has drawn worldwide attention.Despite establishing a relatively complete research system,China still has a long way to go in terms of climate prediction and comprehensive analysis of the triggers of climate issues.The material for this translation report is taken from Chapters 4 and 5 of Unsettled,by Steven E.Koonin.This book introduces the science of the changing climate and the response that society could make to those changes.The scientific and objective arguments in the source text not only provoke readers to consider climate issues in a brand-new way but also provide insights into American meteorological research.Hence,the translator hopes that the translation of the source text is helpful for the development of relevant meteorological research in China.The source text is a popular science text.As well as conveying meteorological information,it also calls for a rational view of climate issues.As a result of a comprehensive analysis,the translator finds that the source text is characterized by long sentences with complicated logic,many long modifiers,and unfixed word order.Therefore,in the light of previous studies and sentence features of the source text,the translator applies translation techniques（such as division and inversion）to express the scientificity,information,and appellation.Under the guidance of Skopos theory,the translator eventually achieves coherence and fidelity of the target text.This report is composed of five chapters.Chapter one is an introduction that introduces task background,task description,significance of the translation task,and structure of the report.Chapter two describes the whole translation process.Chapter three describes translation difficulties caused by long sentences and translation theory.Chapter four is the core of this report.In this chapter,the translator sets examples for how to make the target text more fluently,and readable to the target readers by using various translation techniques,including linear translation,inversion,division,and synthetic translation,according to the Skopos theory.Chapter five presents a summary of this report by the translator.
