The source text of this translation project is comprised of four social news items from Dawn,an English newspaper of Pakistan, and the contents are about female journalists, urban mobility, afforestation and child abuse.Although the source text is characterized by plainness, conciseness, understandability and vividness, there are many difficulties in translating it,such as obscure terms and proper nouns, complex sentence structures, redundancy in writing, incoherence, and cultural differences. This report, therefore, applies the variational translation theory to the translation practice to solve specific problems. The theory’s core philosophy is adaption.Through effective adaptions in the source text, the target text is able to communicate effectively. There are seven adaption techniques.Adding is to add explanatory information to avoid incompleteness.Deleting is to delete redundant information to make the source text more concise.Editing enables the content of the source text to be systematic.Narrating is paraphrasing or retelling of the source text to make the content more understandable.Condensing is conveying the core parts of the source text in the very concise target language, and can make the translated information more concise.Integrating is the combination of two or more similar or logical parts of the source text to avoid incoherence.Altering refers to changes in the content or form of the source text, which can produce an idiomatic translation. This report has shown that the variational translation is helpful for the translator to translate social news, and that the translated news is able to effectively communicate.Furthermore, this report aims to improve the author’s ability to translate social news, and help her with further translation practices. It also hopes that news translation learners can find inspiration for social news translation. |
