A Report On E-C Translation Of Adriatic From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

This practice report is based on the translation of the seventh chapter of internationally renowned geopolitical analyst Robert D.Kaplan’s book Adriatic.Through reading the original text,the reader can not only have a better understanding of the relations between European country the Republic of Montenegro and the surrounding countries and organizations,such as Russia and NATO,but also broaden their knowledge of religion and culture about the coastal countries of the Adriatic.Functional equivalence is the essence of Eugene A.Nida’s translation theory.Nida emphasizes that the relationship between target language readers and the translated message should be substantially the same as that between the source language readers and the original message.He thinks that functional equivalence can be approached from lexical,syntactic,and discoursal aspects,so as to achieve the closest equivalence of the original language.The translators are supposed to initiate the same response from the target language readers to the translated text as the response of the source language readers to the source text.In this translation practice report,the translator classifies the difficulties encountered in the translation process into three categories.In terms of the lexical problems,the translator adopts the methods of addition and conversion to improve the expressiveness of the target language.As to the syntactic problems,the translator adopts the techniques of division and combination to improve the readability.In terms of the discourse problems,the translator adds necessary cohesive devices to the translated text and tries hard to preserve the stylistic expressiveness to increase the consistency.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,the translator analyzes the difficulties encountered in translation process and gives strategies,aiming to provide some reference for her counterparts in translating geopolitics-related works.
