Recent years witness that a large quantity of excellent Chinese films start their journeys overseas.Actually,in essence,whether the international journeys of these domestic movies can be successful or not depends on whether the dialogues of them can be translated correctly,expressively and appealingly or not to a great extent.Film dialogues play a definitely important role in film narration in that they help to reveal the theme,promote the development of plot,portray the image of the characters and show their thoughts and feelings and so on.Practical experiences prove that it is not that difficult to translate film’s lines correctly and expressively due to a lot of factors,but it is especially troublesome to achieve an appealing effect.How to re-present the dramatic tension and aesthetics of the original film by dialogue translation has become an urgent and significant question in the research field of audiovisual translation.Metaphor,as an important rhetorical tool,is of great significance for presenting the artistry of the dialogues,and is a key “entrance” to answer the question mentioned above.This report takes the issue of translation of metaphorical utterances in film dialogues as the main research target,focusing on a comparative case analysis of C-E translation of the China made film Song of the Phoenix under the guidance of the discourse reconstruction theory.With the help of a metaphor identification procedure named “MIPAVT” which is innovatively designed by the author of this report herself,the paper found out that there are three major challenges when translating the metaphorical utterances in audiovisual works,and they are: language functions,sound-picture synchronization and social-cultural differences.In order to overcome these challenges for better translation of the metaphorical utterances,this report sorted out three versions of translations(official translations,machine translations and personal translations)of this film’s lines,and carried out an in-depth comparative analysis of selected examples.In conclusion,some translation methods of literal translation,imitation,substitution and paraphrase are discussed as effective and useful to deal with metaphorical utterances in films hoping to contribute a bit to audiovisual translation studies. |
