With the practice and research development of intercultural activities,the theory of high and low context culture has emerged in the context of intercultural communication.At the same time,interpreters also face intercultural issues in the interpretation process.Therefore,this research analyzes the interpreter competence under the theoretical framework of high and low context culture,with the aim of analyzing interpreters’ language ability,intercultural communication ability and interpreting skills when facing intercultural factors between high and low contexts;and what interpretation methods and techniques are used by interpreters in the interpretation process to solve the problems caused by cultural differences between high and low contexts.This thesis adopts a case study method to analyze the interpretation text of Li Keqiang’s speech at the press conference of the Fifth Session of the 13 th National People’s Congress.In terms of language ability,the interpreter’s language ability is analyzed from two aspects: grammatical ability and pragmatic ability;in terms of intercultural communication ability,the ability of interpreters to handle cultural factors is studied from the following two aspects: intercultural awareness in communication and differences in thinking pattern;finally,interpreting skills,one of the interpreter’s competences,are studied by focusing on the interpretation methods in rendering cultural imagery words and political terms.Research has provided in-depth evidence of the effectiveness and feasibility of applying high and low context cultural theory to interpreter competence.The theory of high and low context culture can provide a new perspective from which the interpreter’s competence can be analysed,and at the same time the research on the competence of interpreters is further expanded in an intercultural context.This article studies the competence of interpreters through the theory of high and low context culture,and concludes that sufficient interpreter competence is crucial for interpreters to deal with intercultural factors between Chinese and English.At the same time,a thorough understanding of cultural differences between high and low contexts can have a significant impact on the interpreting result,and thus interpreter’s competence can be studied from the target text. |
