This is an English-Chinese translation practice report. The source text of the translation practice is excerpted from A History of Greece(Chapter III)written by Evelyn Abbott,an English scholar. The book mainly gives an introduction to the history of Greece, and Chapter III describes the history of the great migrations in Greek history and the relevant legendary history. This chapter has not been translated into Chinese before. This translation practice report gives a brief introduction to Evelyn Abbott,A History of Greece, and the significance and the process of the translation practice in the beginning. Then the translation difficulties encountered by the translator are expounded and they are mainly related to the lexical level and the syntactic level. The former includes people’s names and place names in Greek history,as well as words in context;the latter includes attributive clauses and long sentences. In order to tackle the difficulties, different translation techniques are adopted, and the relevant case analysis is presented. At the lexical level, transliteration, annotation, and shift are applied;at the syntactic level, division, combination, imitation, and recasting are employed.Reflections and limitations of the translation practice are summarized at the end of the report.Through the translation practice, the translator has accumulated translation experience and improved his translation competence.Meanwhile, the translator hopes to provide more usable materials for the study of Greek history in China.
