Fauvism was the first avantgarde painting genre that emerged at the beginning of the20 th century. Its significance for the development of modern art lies in the thorough subversion of traditional painting laws.Fauvism draws on elements of primitive art and oriental art, breaking the three-dimensional requirements of object and spatial representation. In terms of color use,the Fauvism abandons the subtle pursuit of impressionistic color and uses large flat and strong colors to create images and spaces, creating a strong visual impact. The study of fauvism painting in the art academic field focuses on its expression in color and modeling. In fact, the breakthrough of the Fauvism in painting is not only in color, but also in the breakthrough tension of lines in its paintings. This article aims to explore the expressive power of lines in painting through the study of lines in Fauvism painting. On this basis, the author will carry out the research of this topic in two parts.First of all,the author explored the changes in the concept of lines in European painting from the 15 th to 19 th centuries,in order to complete the comb of the development of painting lines before the emergence of Fauvism painting. The second part explores the significance of lines in Fauvism painting by analyzing the characteristics of lines in the paintings of three representative painters,Matisse,Roo,and Duffy. After experiencing a series of research work such as searching for information, analyzing literature, and interpreting images, the author has gained a more mature understanding of the relationship between lines and painting. When painting gets rid of the characteristic of reproducibility, lines have also obtained great liberation in painting.Line is an implicit factor in the artist’s artistic style,a factor that accurately conveys the artist’s painting intent, and is also the easiest independent existence.Artists’ line characteristics and line expressiveness are personalized, and whether they are Matisse,Roo,or Duffy, they all have their own line expressiveness. In fauvism painting, lines not only bear the elements of modeling language, but also serve as a carrier for the viewer to "empathize".Fauvism painters have incorporated the artist’s spiritual self value into the expression of lines, and lines have become extremely simple and pure in their paintings.
