| Nowadays,ecological issues have received considerable attention from the public.Ecological discourse analysis,as a major research approach of ecolinguistics,can reveal the hidden ecological ideology behind the texts surrounding us to promote ecological protection and raise people’s ecological awareness.This research presents an ecological discourse analysis of the attitudinal resources in sustainability reports of Huawei from 2018 to 2020 based on ecological attitude system.With the help of UAM Corpus Tool,this research combines qualitative and quantitative research methods to explore the attitudinal characteristics and the ecological orientation of Huawei’s sustainability reports to unveil the ecological meaning behind the discourse.In terms of the attitudinal characteristics,the findings demonstrate that there are three types of attitudinal resources in Huawei’s sustainability reports.Eco-judgement resources account for the highest proportion,followed by eco-appreciation resources and eco-affect resources.The high frequency of eco-judgement resources displays that Huawei makes judgments with the intention to construe its attitude to show its normality,capability,resolution,truthfulness and ethics.Meanwhile,Huawei’s sustainability reports contain extensive evaluations to introduce its products and assess the value of things through ecoappreciation resources.The low usage of eco-affect resources signifies that Huawei may not be prone to express explicit emotions in the report.In terms of the ecological orientation,in Huawei’s sustainability reports,eco-beneficial attitudes occupy the highest proportion,followed by eco-ambivalent attitudes.Ecodestructive attitudes account for the least proportion.Accordingly,the ecological orientation of Huawei’s sustainability reports is regarded as eco-beneficial.As for eco-beneficial attitudes,these attitudes demonstrate that Huawei has the confidence,perseverance and ability in ecological protection,taking the sustainability initiative actively to build a harmonious and sustainable economy,society and world.As for eco-ambivalent attitudes,on one hand,they prove Huawei’s professional ability,which is not of ecological characteristics.On the other hand,they display Huawei constructs itself as an ethical and moral company image,which can partially guide reader’s ecological awareness.The readers may hold different views subjectively due to the lack of descriptions of corporate’s practical behavior.As for eco-destructive attitudes,these attitudes show that the corporate’s lack of confidence in its abilities for constructing a sustainable world,the unbalanced relationship between human and nature,and the view that corporate overly focuses on profit.Overall,the attitudinal resources in Huawei’s sustainability reports can guide the public’s ecological awareness and help the readers to construct healthy ecological ideology.From the perspective of ecological discourse analysis,this research analyzes the attitudinal resources in Huawei’s sustainability reports to help readers understand the underlying ecological ideology conveyed by the discourse,hoping to provide some inspiration for future research. |
