| Ecological discourse analysis focuses on the role of discourse in the whole language ecosystem,and its study has attracted more and more attention.Appraisal theory is a further enrichment of the study of interpersonal function in systemic functional linguistics.Appraisal theory examines the expression of discourse writers’ attitudes from three aspects: attitude system,graduation and engagement.Attitude is the core of appraisal theory,which includes three subsystems: affect,judgement and appreciation.But comparatively speaking,the research on attitudinal resources in documentary commentary by using appraisal theory is not enough.Taking the attitude system of appraisal theory as the theoretical framework,this thesis studies the attitudinal resources in Planet Earth Ⅱ,in order to understand their distributions,features and ecological thoughts,so as to reveal the hidden meaning behind these resources.This study mainly draws the following conclusions: The documentary involves three kinds of attitude resources,affect,judgement and appreciation resources.Among them,the type of appreciation resources is the most frequently used,with the number of 232,accounting for 43%,which shows that the documentary has made a positive appreciation of the beauty of natural animals and plants;secondly,there are 214 judgement resources,occupying 39%,which shows that the documentary depicts animals and plants as creatures with the same action ability as humans;finally,there are only 96 affect resources,taking up 19%,which shows that the documentary itself is objective.The core of documentary is truth.This documentary shows that the proportion of positive attitudinal resources is higher than that of negative attitudinal resources.This shows that the documentary tends to convey positive ecological discourse to mankind.The proportion of inscribed attitudinal resources is much higher than that of invoked attitudinal resources.This reflects that the documentary actively guides people to consciously maintain the ecological environment and realize the harmonious coexistence between man and nature.This documentary reflects the two ecological thoughts: Self-realization and eco-centrism equality.Self-realization is reflected in paying attention to the survival and development of animals and plants.Eco-centrism equality is mainly reflected in the recognition of the right of animals and plants to survive and develop.This documentary uses specific language structures such as nominalization and non-human agents to realize the interaction between ecological thoughts and social environment.This study has the following significance: firstly,it enriches the research of documentary discourse from the perspective of linguistics;secondly,it provides valuable enlightenment for us to apply appraisal theory to the study of natural documentary discourse;finally,it helps people cultivate their awareness of ecological protection to build a global ecological community with a shared future. |
