| Ecolinguistics is a new branch of linguistics with the combination of ecology and linguistics, whose mission is to study the language through the analyses of the ecological factors,as to reveal the interaction of language with environment. And ecological discourse is a crucial topic in ecolinguistics.Stibbe(2014)defines ecological discourse as the discourse that affects the interaction between human beings, other species and the natural environment, and proposes that the analysis of ecological discourse should be turned to an ecological analysis of discourse.Stibbe(2015)further divides discourse into eco-beneficial discourse,eco-ambivalent discourse and ecodestructive discourse. Many scholars analyze ecological discourse from the approaches of critical discourse analysis, cognitive linguistics, systemic functional linguistics and ecological discourse analysis. The research subject selected in this thesis is the news reports on “marine ecosystem” in China Daily and The New York Times, which are ecological discourses. And they can reflect the attitude and orientations towards the natural ecosystem, and has a specific impact on the ecological awareness of the public. In this thesis,60 news reports are selected as the data, from the official websites of China Daily and The New York Times with “marine ecosystem” as the keyword,in the time range of 2017.6-2022.7.Furthermore,the selected news reports are tagged with affective, judgmental and appreciative resources by UAM Corpus Tool 6.2.With a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis method, this study further analyzes the distributional features and ecological properties of the attitudinal resources, based on the ecosophy of “diversity and harmony, interaction and co-existence”,aiming to answer the following three research questions.1)What are the distributional features of the attitudinal resources in the news reports on “marine ecosystem” in China Daily and The New York Times? What are the similarities and differences of the distributional features?2)What are the ecological properties of the attitudinal resources in the news reports on “marine ecosystem” in China Daily and The New York Times? What are the similarities and differences of the ecological properties?3)What are the leading factors to the similarities and differences in ecological properties of the attitudinal resources in the relevant reports? In regard to the first research question, the quantitative analysis method is mainly adopted to present the distribution of attitude resources in the data.In regard to the second and third research questions, the ecological properties of attitudinal resources are judged with the qualitive method, and the influencing factors that lead to differences and similarities in ecological properties are further analyzed. It is found that the total number of attitudinal resources in the news reports on“marine ecosystem” in China Daily and The New York Times were 251 and 368 respectively. In terms of the distributional features of attitudinal resources,in the data of China Daily, the distribution proportion of judgmental resources is the highest, with a proportion of 51.4%;the distribution of appreciative resources is in the middle, and accounting for 45.4%;affective resources are the least, taking up 3.2%.In the news reports selected from The New York Times, appreciative resources account for the largest proportion, with a percentage of 58.7%,followed by judgmental resources, with a percentage of 32.1%,and the least distribution is affective resources, accounting for9.2%.Among the attitudinal resources, the proportion of affective resources is the lowest, the positive attitudinal resources are more than the negative attitudinal resources, and the explicit attitudinal resources are less than the implicit attitudinal resources. However, the positive attitude resources in the data of China Daily are 28.3% higher than those in the data of The New York Times, and the implicit attitudinal resources are27% higher than those in the data of The New York Times. In terms of ecological properties, the proportion of eco-beneficial attitudes in the news reports on “marine ecosystem” in China Daily and The New York Times is 72.5%and 61.4%,all of which are more than 60%.Eco-beneficial attitudes are conducive to spreading the ecological awareness of protecting and respecting the ocean. In the news reports of China Daily, the proportion of eco-ambivalent attitudes is 19.9%,and the proportion of eco-destructive attitudes is 7.6%.In the data of The New York Times, the proportion of eco-ambivalent attitudes is 27.7%,and the proportion of eco-destructive attitudes is 10.9%.By comparison,it is found that the attitudinal resources in the data from China Daily and The New York Times are ecologically beneficial as a whole, and the selected discourses are generally ecologically friendly. However, the eco-beneficial attitudes in the data of The New York Times are 11% less than that in the data of China Daily, the eco-ambivalent attitudes are 7.8% more than that in China Daily, and the eco-destructive attitudes are 3.3% more than that in China Daily. The factors leading to such similarities are news genre and the same theme, and the factors leading to such differences are cultural values and news tendency. From the analysis of the distributional features and the ecological properties in the news reports on “marine ecosystem” in China Daily and The New York Times, this study can help readers better understand the characteristics of attitudinal resources in the discourse related to the marine ecosystem, deepen their understanding of the relevant ecological discourse, and improve their awareness of protecting marine ecology. At the same time, this study also provides a reference for news reporters to use attitudinal resources to convey ecological orientation more reasonably. |
