Study On White Pottery Buddhist Statues

White pottery Buddhist statues are made of porcelain clay,molded into billets and then fired in kilns,which is a relatively rare type of ancient Buddhist statue.In recent years,as white pottery Buddhist statues continue to be unearthed and research data gradually improved,the in-depth study of white pottery Buddhist statues has become possible.The thesis uses the methods of documentary research,archaeological typology,and comparative research to investigate the types,characteristics,and functions of white pottery Buddhist statues,and to compare the bronze and stone Buddhist statues in Shandong and Hebei with white pottery Buddhist statues,and to analyze the stylistic origins of white pottery Buddhist statues.White pottery Buddhist statues are distributed in Boxing,Gaoqing,Linqu in central Shandong and Jiaxiang in southern Lu,as well as in Neiqiu and Nangong in southwestern Hebei.The statues were popular from the Northern Qi to the Middle Tang dynasties,and are divided into two types of monolithic statues and niche statues,among which there are two types of monolithic statues: semi-relief and round carvings.According to the type,shape and costume of the statue,there are five kinds of statues:single Buddha standing statue,single Buddha sitting statue,one Buddha,two Bodhisattvas,two Rexes,single Bodhisattva standing statue and seated Lohan statue.According to the evolution of the posture,clothing and other factors,the statue is divided into two periods from the Northern Qi to Sui and from the early Tang to the middle Tang,the early statue has a soft and subtle face with a slight smile;the late statue is between rich and obese,with a clear facial contour and a smaller mouth than the early one,and the sense of tight closure is obvious.White pottery Buddhist statue style is deeply influenced by the copper and stone Buddhist statues in Shandong and Hebei.White pottery Buddha statue in the backlight style,clothing style,robe style,Buddha sitting posture,decorative patterns and statue theme and copper Buddha statue is basically the same,and even some white pottery Bodhisattva statue style and copper Bodhisattva statue style is identical.In addition,the white pottery Buddhist statue is obviously influenced by the Qu Yang white stone statue and the "Qingzhou style" statue.For example,the "U"-shaped clothes style in the Buddha statue;the style of the robe with the shoulders and the right side;the combination of a Buddha and two bodhisattvas with two rhesus statues;the style of the bodhisattva statue with the bun in front of the forehead;the style of the "X"-shaped celluloid in front of the abdomen;the style of the lotus buds,the vase and other decorations all White pottery Buddhist statues have a direct impact.White pottery Buddhist statues belong to a type of "off-buddha",mainly for large monastic activities,placed in temples,halls,grottoes and other public places,statue masters or organizers are mostly monks and nuns of monasteries and government officials,the purpose of statue making is generally for "the king and the parents of teachers and monks The purpose of the statue is to pray for the blessing of "the king and the parents of teachers and monks" and "all sentient beings",which is collective in nature.
