Learning engagement is an important prerequisite for college students’ mental health and academic achievement.However,the existing data show that college students generally have the problem of low learning engagement.Therefore,taking measures to improve college students’ learning engagement has become the focus of college students’ mental health education.When learning engagement is low,many students spontaneously make task,relational,and cognitive adjustments to learning,a process known as study crafting.Studies have shown that study crafting is an effective bottom-up approach to improve students’ learning engagement.When learning engagement is low,students will spontaneously adjust their learning tasks,relationships and cognition.However,not all students are successful in study crafting.Therefore,the main purpose of this study is to explore the internal mechanism of study crafting affecting learning engagement,and to carry out targeted study crafting intervention on this basis to improve students’ learning engagement.In this study,three substudies were conducted to systematically explore how study crafting and its interventions affect learning engagement.Study 1 is an exploratory study on the internal mechanism of study crafting affecting learning engagement.Through the interview of 18 undergraduate students and the code analysis,the study found that: students generally have low engagement problems such as lack of motivation,and confusion.Self-esteem,learning motivation and external environment are the main reasons that affect college students’ learning engagement.Study crafting is a common measure for college students to improve their learning engagement.Study crafting can enhance learning engagement by improving individual self-esteem and intrinsic motivation.Study 2 is a validation study of the internal mechanism of study crafting affecting learning engagement.Study 2 combines identity theory and self-determination theory,holding that study crafting increases individual identity verification to improve self-esteem,meets the basic psychological needs of individuals to improve intrinsic motivation,and the improvement of self-esteem can also enhance individual intrinsic motivation.In study 2,the study crafting scale was revised and tested for reliability and validity,and then 396 questionnaires were collected using the corresponding scale of each variable to verify the hypothesis.The results show that self-esteem and intrinsic motivation play a single mediating and chain mediating role in the influence of study crafting on learning engagement.Study 3 is an applied study on the internal mechanism of study crafting affecting learning engagement.Study 3 carried out study crafting intervention from the perspective of improving self-esteem and intrinsic motivation,combined with the four-stage model of crafting intervention.The intervention group and the control group were 39 and 40 undergraduates with low levels of study crafting and learning engagement,respectively.The results showed that the four-week group counselling achieved a good effect: there was no significant difference between the intervention group and the control group in the levels of study crafting,self-esteem,intrinsic motivation and learning engagement measured before,while the intervention group had significantly higher levels of the above variables measured after and follow-up.In summary,this study found that study crafting and its interventions enhance learning engagement by boosting self-esteem and intrinsic motivation.In the theoretical sense,this study starts from the main factors affecting students’ learning engagement,and explores the internal mechanism of study crafting affecting learning engagement by combining identity theory and self-determination theory,enriching the theoretical achievements in this field.In a practical sense,the effectiveness of the study crafting intervention scheme developed in this study has been verified,and it can be applied to educational practice for educators.
