| As the central region of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area,Guangxi is increasingly deepening its economic and cultural exchanges with countries around the world.The promotion of local ethnic culture and the increased output of traditional costume culture are the needs of the situation and the times.Guangxi Ethnic Costume,with costume culture and traditional customs of indigenous residents in Guangxi ethnic areas as the starting point,uses different sections to provide a generalized introduction and detailed explanations of the costume features,origin,and evolution of ethnic indigenous residents in Guangxi.The translation of this book will be beneficial for better promoting the ethnic costume culture of Guangxi,and expanding overseas dissemination and cultural exchanges.This report takes the Chinese-English translation practice of the excerpts as the analysis object,and explores the translation difficulties at the lexical,syntactic and textual levels in the Chinese-English translation practice of a cultural informative text focused on the ethnic costume,with the aim of solving translation problems and summarizing translation methods under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation.The first translation difficulty is at the lexical level,including the translation of technical terms,costume words and culture-loaded words.The second one is at the syntactic level,consisting of sentences with logical steps,sentences with implicit logicality and run-on sentences.The third one is at the textual level,including the improvement of textual coherence and the textual information processing.In accordance with the features of the cultural informative text,the translation theory of Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation is adopted.On the one hand,consideration shall be taken to the principles of authenticity,objectivity and accuracy of information transmission;on the other hand,attention shall be paid to the response of the target readers in the process of translation,so as to erase obscurities,and enhance readability.Based on the above theoretical basis,a variety of translation methods are adopted to solve the difficulties at the three levels mentioned above.At the lexical level,according to different types of words,literal translation and literal translation plus annotations are used to render the technical terms,transliteration,transliteration plus annotations,free translation and picture-aided translation are adopted to translate the costume words,and annotations and free translation are comprehensively utilized to translate the culture-loaded words.At the syntactic level,addition,rearrangement and division are adopted to translate sentences with logical steps,sentences with implicit logicality,and run-on sentences respectively.At the textual level,the internal coherence of the text is improved by amplification,such as adding topic sentences,transitional sentences and concluding sentences,and the information of the translation is integrated by omitting redundant or unnecessary information so as to improve the readability and alleviate readers’ reading burdens.The various translation methods adopted above make the translation more accurate and fluent,which is in line with the linguistic features of the cultural informative text in the target language,and achieves the purpose of publicizing the ethnic costume of Guangxi and promoting the costume culture.In conclusion,this report aims to explore typical examples during the translation and summarize corresponding translation methods,hoping to provide experience for translation practices in the ethnic costume. |
