A Report On Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting For The 2021 China-ASEAN Training Course On Ecological Planting Techniques For Medical Plants

The 2021 China-ASEAN Training Course on the Progress and Protection of Traditional Medicine as well as the Study and Demonstration on the Conservation Techniques was held on July 21 th,2021,in Guangxi Botanical Garden for Medical Garden.In light of the Covid-19 prevention and control policy,the training course was held via video link.It is oriented towards enhancing China-ASEAN medicine’s role globally while brisking the effort in shaping the cluster of emerging industries with regard to traditional China-ASEAN medicine.With great honor,the interpreter was responsible for the consecutive interpreting.This report will elaborate on the interpreting practices in the course on Ecological Planting Techniques for Medical Plants.This report covers task description,pre-interpreting preparation,case analysis,self-reflection and feedback,as well as conclusion.It briefly illustrates the background and purpose of this task,while highlighting the pre-interpreting preparation and case analysis.Concerning the pre-interpreting part,this report discusses how the interpreter prepared for the task before and after he has received the course slides.Also,included are the significance of background information and related terminologies,as well as how physical and mental conditions could exert influence on the interpreter during interpreting.As to the case analysis,from the perspective of ostensive-inferential process and the optimal relevance under relevance theory,the author analyzed the challenges concerning terminologies,incoherent speech,speaker’s accent as well as non-linguistic challenges during remote interpreting and summarized corresponding coping strategies.For example,regarding the difficulty in interpreting terminologies,addition or replacement strategies could be utilized;when it comes to incoherent speech,replacement or verification strategies could be utilized;in terms of speaker’s accent,strategies such as anticipation or omission could be employed;with regard to non-linguistic factors,verification or addition could be used.Lastly,at the conclusion part,grounded on this task,the author has highlighted the significance of pre-interpreting preparation and relevant coping strategies during video conference interpreting,hoping to provide more insights and guidance for the work and study in the future.
