The creation and research of satirical comedy have witnessed remarkable developments since the beginning of the new century.A major advancement in research is the systematic examination of comedy history and the formulation of new theoretical frameworks. However,a research gap exists in the field of contemporary satirical comedy, which has been less explored and analyzed than traditional satirical comedy.Furthermore, the study of theatrical effects,a crucial dimension of comedy, has been largely overlooked. This topic aims to address this gap. This topic aims to examine the theatrical effects of satirical comedy, considering that most of the existing comedy research in China focuses on the discussion of comedy mechanisms and principles, comedy’s spiritual core, comedy aesthetics, and cultural and historical inheritance. The impact of theatrical effects induced by comedy on the audience, especially in contemporary comedy, has been scarcely explored. This paper intends to offer some insights on this issue, using the original drama “Carnival” as a case study of theatrical effects. Moreover, this paper will review comedy works, particularly outstanding comedy works since the new century, with reference to classic theories related to comedy, society and psychology. This paper will also investigate the creative concept, method and process of comedy creators;and reflect on the new trend and its source and influence of comedy in contemporary times from the perspective of satirical comedy theory and provide a new interpretation for the phenomenon of comedy culture. The paper consists of four chapters. The first chapter introduce-s the concept and development of satirical comedy and identifies “Carnival” as an example of this genre. It also analyzes the theatric-al effects manifested in“Carnival”.The second chapter explores the elements of dream and violence in the comedy environment,as well as the techniques of displacement and repetition in comedy,in relation to the comedy plots in “Carnival”.The third chapter examines the theatrical effects produced by the using of “alienation effect” in comedy, and how the portrayal of comedy characters influences the audience. The fourth chapter compares other satirical comedy works from two perspectives: innovation in expression form and depth in connotation,to discuss how contemporary satirical comedy achieves simultaneous development in content and form.
