A Report On C-E Translation Of X Wheel Loader Operation And Maintenance Manual (Excerpts)

The "Belt and Road" construction initiative has driven the infrastructure construction of countries along the route,bringing opportunities for China’s construction machinery industry.At present,the development of China’s machinery technology industry is gaining momentum.As more mechanical engineering products go overseas,the demand for the English translation of product maintenance manuals has also risen.Its English translation version can meet the needs of overseas customers to understand the basic maintenance information or the simple maintenance of the product and has a strong practicality.This translation practice material is excerpted from the X Wheel Loader Operation and Maintenance Manual,which mainly includes maintenance guidelines,new vehicle walk-in,periodic maintenance requirements,important maintenance procedures,and other maintenance procedures,etc.It is an informative text.The report is guided by Katharina Reiss’ s Text Typology and analyzes the guiding effect of the theory from three levels: lexical,syntactic,and textual,with specific cases in the selected material.Reiss points out the need for accuracy,integrity,and logic in the translation of informational texts.First of all,accuracy is elaborated at the lexical level.There are a large number of technical terms and category words in the mechanical technology texts,so the translation of the terms should be accurate,and due to the conciseness of this kind of text,it is sometimes necessary to omit the Chinese category words in consideration of the specific situation;secondly,integrity is elaborated at the syntactic level.The translation report material is filled with a large number of non-subjective sentences and run-on sentences.For the translation of non-subjective sentences,the author adopts passive sentences,imperative sentences,and adding subjects,and so on.For run-on sentences,non-core verbs can be converted into non-predicates,prepositional phrases,or other subordinate structures;finally,logicality is elaborated at the textual level.In the process of Chinese-English translation,when the translation lacks words that can express the sequence and cause-effect connection,it is necessary to add such words to make the chapter translation more logical.At the same time,when translating chapters,we should be able to clarify the internal logic of the text and adjust the language order when necessary to make the translation more understandable.This translation practice shows the guiding and applicability of Reiss’ Text Typology to the translation of mechanical technology texts and summarizes the experience and the shortcomings exposed by myself in the practice.It is hoped that this translation practice report can provide some reference and inspiration for the translation research of the same type of text.
