Abstract/Summary:
Literature is the common spiritual wealth of mankind and an important form of communication between people of different countries and races, playing an irreplaceable role in spiritual communication with its power to reach out to the heart. In recent years, with the deepening of international cultural exchanges, the demand for translations of outstanding foreign literary works has been growing, and the scope for the development of literary translation has also been expanding. The source text for this translation practice report is All About Love: New Version, one of the classic works by American author Bell Hooks, which is not yet available in a published Chinese translation. The first three chapters of the book are selected for this translation practice project and the translation is analyzed.Peter Newmark divides texts into three types: expressive text, informative text and evocative text, and translators should adopt different translation strategies and methods according to the different text types.According to Newmark’s classification of text types, literary works belong to expressive texts, and translators should adopt semantic translation strategy when translating such texts. However,in translation practice, there are still some deficiencies when applying semantic translation strategy alone. Therefore, communicative translation method is utilized,or even these two methods are used at the same time. This translation practice report focuses on how to better solve the practical problems encountered in translating the source text under the guidance of Newmark’s semantic translation theory, supplemented by the guidance of communicative translation theory, the translation can achieve an expression effect similar to that of the source language and be better accepted by the readers of the target language. In the case study part, the author found that: firstly, under the guidance of semantic translation, the translation version can faithfully convey the meaning of the source text and try to ensure the accuracy, fluency and appropriateness of the original text. And yet, under the guidance of semantic translation theory, the analysis and translation of the source text still have some shortcomings, such as in some translation version which are still obscure to the target readers,so communicative translation methods needs to be applied to convey the similar form and feelings as the original and enhance the communicative and readable nature of the translation. Finally, the translator adopts the semantic and communicative translation method combined, always taking the meaning of language and its communicative function as the standard for measuring the translation quality, and affirming the importance of Newmark’s translation method for measuring the translation quality.Through this translation practice, the author has gained a further understanding of the application of semantic translation theory combined with communicative translation theory, and at the same time has gained a deeper insight into the translation of expressive texts. The author hopes that the analysis and summary of this translation practice report can provide valuable reference and help for the translation work related to other expressive texts.
