Ernest Meissonier was a 19th-century French academic painter whose historical paintings are known for their small,delicate style.When he was alive,Meissonier was selected as an academician of the Academy of Fine Arts for his high artistic achievements,and won the highest honors such as the Grand Cross.With the development of modern art such as impressionism,French academic painting represented by Meissonier gradually faded from the stage of history.As a French academic master with lofty artistic achievements in historical painting,the study of Meissonier’s historical painting needs to be integrated into the historical background of that time,so as to have a deeper understanding of the value of The Times.This paper uses the methods of history,image analysis and literature analysis to study the historical paintings of Meissonier,so as to explore the historical value of his historical paintings.The paper first introduces the origin of the creation of Mersoniere’s historical painting.Secondly,according to the life course of Mersoniere,his historical painting creation is divided into three stages to summarize the creation characteristics of painters in different periods.Thirdly,it discusses the language characteristics and artistic pursuit of Meissonier’s historical painting creation,and summarizes its artistic style.Finally,he demonstrated that Meissonier solved the problem of "ending" of western historical paintings,made it clear that his historical paintings are the continuation of academic style,and discussed the historical value of Meissonier’s historical paintings.Through research,it can be concluded that Meissonier should have a lofty position in the history of art,and his historical paintings have important enlightenment significance to the contemporary thematic creation in China.
