French romantic painting is a distinctive school in the first half of the 19 th century. As a weapon of romanticism and the French Revolution, its romantic character modeling has the nature of the intersection of French social history and literary trends that can not be ignored. Therefore, this paper will analyze the origin of French romantic figure modeling from three main aspects of cultural factors, social factors and painter’s personal factors, and take the works of Delacroix, the leader of French romantic painting,as the main case to illustrate the distinctive characteristics of French romantic figure modeling and the unique artistic pursuit of romantic painters. This paper focuses on the romantic painters portraying many images of "negative romanticism" who are very painful such as suicide, assassination, lung disease, loneliness, depression, and mental illness. They are brave to look at death, physical pain and inner world, which is an important artistic way to find self liberation by expressing emotion. These specific character modeling features are mainly reflected in four aspects: the character’s face, body language, clothing wrinkles and human body performance. In the argument of this paper,French romantic figure modeling is no longer the loftiness and beauty in traditional painting, but the "ugly" figure image. It breaks the painting standard of western traditional figure modeling before the19 th century, and in the long history of the development of Western figure modeling, there are three characteristics of "classical","romantic" and "modern" in one, which is the reason that influenced the Impressionism and the Modernism in the 19-20 th century.
