| Since the late Qing dynasty,the traditional concept of marriage custom in China has been impacted by the western culture,and some people of insight advocate the reform of marriage custom.At the end of the Qing dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China,China experienced a series of social changes,and the society generally demanded that the customs be changed,rise to“Simple,economic,solemn”for the purpose of group marriage.Group marriage is further developed on the basis of“Civilized marriage”.The government intends to interfere with the public’s social life and promote the change of customs.Therefore,the rise and development of group marriage depends on the promotion of the government,is an important case of marriage reform.Guangzhou is adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao,and ideological and cultural trends are surging.On December 1,1935,Guangzhou held the first group marriage,aiming at reforming marriage customs and promoting the change of customs.This paper takes the group marriage in Guangzhou City from 1935 to 1949 as the research object,analyzes the historical background of its rise,and sorts out the development process and changes in different periods by using a large amount of archival materials,this paper investigates the organization and management of the government in organizing group marriage,interprets the role of the government in promoting the change of customs,and evaluates the social influence and effect of group marriage.The Guangzhou Municipal Government participates in the social life of the people,and transforms the private wedding into a public activity under the social supervision by holding group marriage.The marriage custom has a strong inheritance,needs to go through a long-term transformation,although the Guangzhou Group marriage flourishes for a time,it has not been able to replace the main status of the traditional wedding,and finally gradually decline.This shows that changing customs is not easy and requires a long-term process. |
