| Climate change has been of common concern to the international community.In2022,the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC)released the Sixth Assessment Report. The second part of the report is Climate Change 2022: Impacts,Adaptation and Vulnerability. It proceeds from objective facts and comprehensively expounds on the multiple impacts of climate change, offering a fresh perspective for the implementation of adaptation actions. The source text is excerpted from Chapter10 Asia of the report,in which special attention is paid to the climate change impacts and risks of Asia.It provides a scientific basis for further adaptation actions across all levels of governance in Asia. Therefore,it is worthwhile to translate the source text and disseminate the information in it.The well-organized source text contains a great deal of terms, nominalizations, passive voices and long and difficult sentences that will create difficulties in translation. As an informative text,it puts much emphasis on the accuracy of the information during the translation.Simultaneously,“textual equivalence” is the central plank of Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory, the core of which comes in line with the translation requirements of the source text. Therefore,it is available for guiding this translation report. The translation practice shows that, depending on the translation shifts,it can not only accurately transmit the original meaning of the source text with idiomatic expressions, but also enable the fluency and readability of the translation, meeting the objective of textual equivalence. However, this translation practice finds some limitations of Translation Shifts Theory.Although it has clear and systematic classifications, the theory can merely guide the translation shifts at the sentence level to a maximal degree. Therefore, considering the coherence of the target text, the translator needs to make a judgment on whether to conduct translation shifts or not under the context. This translation report discusses various translation shifts based on the text features and translation difficulties of the source text, which can provide a reference for translating such texts. To some extent, this translation practice can enrich the materials related to climate change governance in China and strengthen public awareness of the climate crisis at home. |
