Study On New Street Names In Wuhan City In The Linguistic Landscape Perspective

This paper takes the 1,358 newly named street names in Wuhan city since 2013 as the research object,and uses survey method and statistical analysis to investigate the linguistic characteristics,naming methods and features,and signage language landscape,and makes suggestions for naming problems,signage translation and placement.It provides data reference and intellectual support for the in-depth sociolinguistic research,promotes the optimization of urban street naming,and helps the future development of the city.The new street names in Wuhan city have certain phonetic,lexical and grammatical characteristics.In terms of phonetics,three-syllable and four-syllable are dominant,and the latter accounts for an overwhelming advantage.There are many combinations of flat and oblique words,and street names starting with a flat sound are dominant,among which the number of "ping-ping-ze" format is the largest.In terms of vocabulary,there are a lot of directional and numerical words,some auspicious words,regional and cultural words,and words for natural landscapes.In terms of grammar,the basic structure of "proper name +common name" is supplemented by "proper name + numeral + common name","proper name + orientation word + common name" and "proper name + adjective + common name"."proper name + adjective + common name","proper name + azimuth + number + common name","proper name + number + administrative district common name + adjective + street common name" and other structural patterns.Among them,the proper names are filled by noun,verb or adjective words,with the largest proportion of noun words.The structure types of proper names include verb-object,joint,subject-predicate,partial-positive,number,etc.The naming methods of new street names in Wuhan city mainly include: naming by mountain names,naming by river and lake names,naming by animal and plant names,naming by famous enterprise names or brand names,naming by other city names,naming by the names of surrounding settlements,naming by the combination of names of both ends of the street,naming by old place names reflecting history and culture,etc.The new street name presents a series of naming,focusing on highlighting the regional function and other features.The linguistic arrangement of the language landscape of the new street names in Wuhan reflects the dominance of Chinese as the preferred language code.The signage language landscape plays the information function of communication and service.In terms of transliteration,there are problems that the transliteration of common names does not follow the unified standard,some of the new street names have the same structural pattern but the transliteration order is not consistent,and the spelling of Hanyu Pinyin letters is not standardized.In terms of placement,there are some new streets are not set up with the corresponding road signs,the same section of the sign color is not uniform,the sign bending damage is not replaced in a timely manner,the sign text strokes off is not completed in a timely manner and other issues.For the naming of new streets in Wuhan,the signage translation and placement of the problems,the author put forward some targeted suggestions.In terms of naming,we should dig deeper into the local historical and cultural elements,listen to the opinions of all walks of life and consider adapting to the needs of modern urban construction;in terms of signage translation,we should strengthen the study of relevant standards,strictly regulate the writing and increase the publicity to improve the public’s awareness;in terms of signage placement,we should pay attention to official information,set up signs in a timely manner,clarify the division of labor among members,refine the work responsibilities and follow the relevant standards,Strengthen signage management.
