This translation practice report is based on translating the second chapter and the ninth chapter of The Super Age into Chinese. The Super Age,written by Bradley Schurman,an American author,is a social science book that mainly introduces the emerging aging society and analyzes its causes, manifestations, and effects on social, economic, political, and cultural life. The source book is a typical informative text, mainly conveying information and opinions about the aging society to the public.Because informative texts take on the linguistic characteristics of careful wording, complex sentences and strong logicality, the translator encountered many abstract words, implicit logical relations and socio-cultural background information in the process of translation, which may not only increase the difficulty of translation, but also make the target text hard for readers to comprehend. In order to solve these problems, the translator takes the Communicative Translation Theory proposed by the famous scholar Peter Newmark as the perspective to guide the translation practice and ensure the translation quality. This translation report focuses on the translation of implicit information at lexical and syntactic levels in social science texts. In the process of translating the implicit information, the translator not only needs to infer the true meanings intended by the author by combining the contextual background, but also concerns the reading experience of Chinese readers and expresses them in plain language. In the report, translation methods such as extension, literal translation with annotation, addition and paraphrase are mainly used to make the implicit information explicit,so as to enhance the readability of translation and achieve the communicative purpose of translation.Through this report, the translator summarizes several methods of representing implicit information of the source text into target text, aiming to provide reference for other translators dealing with the same problems.Meanwhile, the translation to be published may also disseminate some relevant knowledge of aging society to the target readers, playing a role in helping them better understand such a social problem.
