Since the 18 th National Congress,China has always emphasized the need to strengthen international communication capacity building and advocated all parties in society to make efforts to "tell the Chinese story well",documentaries have become an important "tool" for foreign communication, and many foreign directors have started to focus their filming on China. There are few excellent documentaries in China, but the grand narrative and strong propaganda color make them ineffective.Ryo Takeuchi,as a foreign director in China, has made a large number of documentaries on Chinese subjects, which have attracted a great deal of attention at home and abroad.Based on this, this study uses textual analysis, case study analysis and classical narrative theory to study the narrative of Ryo Takeuchi’s documentaries on China,in order to help China’s documentaries to make a better voice in foreign political, economic and cultural communication, and to provide a reference for China’s efforts to build a wise, dignified and responsible image of a great nation. This study briefly summarizes the broadcast data and communication effects of the documentary films on China by director Ryo Takeuchi, and uses the "dichotomy" proposed by Genette as the main theoretical basis to analyze the narrative subjects of the documentary films on China by director Ryo Takeuchi, and discusses how to construct an image of China through narratives from his perspective. From his perspective,he discusses how to construct an image of China through narrative. At the same time,we analyze the narrative discourse in Ryo Takeuchi’s documentaries based on the "dichotomy" theory, and discuss the narrative discourse from three aspects: narrative perspective, narrative time, and narrative space. Then, through a detailed splitting and description of the documentary samples,we summarize the characteristics of the narrative structures used by director Ryo Takeuchi in his documentaries on Chinese subjects and the effects these structures bring to the documentaries.Based on the above research, this study further summarizes the narrative strategies of director Ryo Takeuchi in his documentaries on Chinese subjects, and distills the insights of his documentary narratives that have implications for the cross-cultural narratives of Chinese documentaries. The reason why Ryo Takeuchi’s documentaries on China are so popular and easily understood by audiences at home and abroad is that he breaks the traditional grand narrative of documentaries and uses a more grounded "participatory narrative" to bring them closer to the audience. In addition, his flexible integration of panel structure makes the documentary clear and interesting at the same time. Many foreign directors still wear tinted glasses when making documentaries on Chinese subjects due to many deep-rooted stereotypes,so China needs to learn from Ryo Takeuchi’s documentary narratives and actively cooperate with foreign directors to tell the Chinese story through the "other" and complete the "othering" of China’s image. Therefore,China needs to learn and learn from Ryo Takeuchi’s narrative, and at the same time, actively cooperate with foreign directors to tell the Chinese story through the "other",and complete the "othering" of China’s image,so as to achieve foreign communication and gain more and stronger international discourse.
