| Reading is a crucial way of language learning and plays a vital role in improving students’ reading ability.Students can effectively enhance their English reading ability of identification,comprehension,and analysis by analyzing,internalizing,transferring,and creating texts.However,problems persist in reading teaching.Reading materials are learned in a fragmented manner,with activities limited to comprehension and memorization,which hinders in-depth text analysis and impedes students’ reading ability development.Deep learning facilitates students in engaging in profound processing and generating meaningful insights from textual knowledge and information.It contributes to students’ comprehensive and deep comprehension,mastery,and application of text materials,thereby providing a new perspective to address the above-mentioned problems.Based on a review of the factors influencing English reading ability and related teaching models,this study applies deep learning to English reading teaching and explores the effects of deep learning oriented English reading teaching on developing high school students’ reading ability.This study primarily addresses the following two questions:(1)What are the effects of deep learning oriented English reading teaching on high school students’ English reading ability?(2)What are the differences in the effects on the English reading ability of high school students at different levels?In 16-week quasi-experimental study,78 students in two parallel classes in a high school in Guangdong were selected as participants.A deep learning oriented English reading teaching model was used in the experimental class,and a regular reading teaching model was used in the control class.Multiple research instruments,such as questionnaires,tests,and semi-structured interviews,were utilized to explore and address the two research questions.Finally,SPSS26 software was used to analyze the collected data by independent sample t-test and paired-sample t-test.The results indicate that:(1)the deep learning oriented English reading teaching can effectively promote the development of students’ English reading ability.(2)The deep learning oriented English reading teaching has a positive effect on the reading ability development of students at high,middle,and low levels.Specifically,the reading ability of students at the high level significantly improved in the analysis dimension,the reading ability of students at the middle level significantly improved in both comprehension and analysis dimensions,and the reading ability of students at the low level significantly improved in all three dimensions.It can be seen that deep learning oriented English reading teaching can help to solve the problems related to fragmented textual information and superficial thinking activities in reading teaching and to contribute to the development of students’ reading ability,especially for the students at low level.This study provides insights into the teaching process and related strategies for applying deep learning in high school English reading teaching,and contributes to the diversified approaches of developing students’ English reading ability. |
