Poseidon is one of the twelve main gods of Greek mythology in Olympos. In Homer’s Odyssey,he is also known as one of the three main gods of ancient Greek Olympus,as he was given the sea as a territory after he had jointly divided the world into three equal parts with the god king Zeus and the king of the underworld,Hades.Poseidon was always worshipped by the Greeks as the master of the sea due to the special geographical situation of Greece. However,Poseidon’s priesthoods and status were not static-it changed with the development of ancient Greek society, reflecting to some extent the changing understanding of the relationship between man and nature.Through the evolution of Poseidon’s priesthood and status in different periods of the Cretan civilisation, the Mycenaean civilisation, the Homeric era and the early Archaic period, this article explores how the ancient Greeks’ views on the relationship between man and nature were changing step by step, and through the contest between Poseidon, the god of the sea,and Athena, the goddess of wisdom,in the Homeric epic and the eventual defeat of Poseidon,it expresses It is this rise in humanism and rationalism that gave rise to the emergence of Greek city-state politics after the end of Homer’s time.Although,Athena’s status grew with the advent of the Greek city-state era.But Poseidon,as the god of the sea,who represented the natural force factor, was always closely linked to the natural geography in which the Greeks lived, reflecting the Greek understanding of the relationship between man and nature-that is,that man came from nature and always remained inextricably linked to it.Thus,no matter what period of Greek history, including the age of the city-states,Poseidon,the god of the sea, always played an integral role and occupied an important place in the minds of the Greeks.
