With social development,China pays more and more attention to the soft power of culture,and culture has been interwoven in people’s life.Language,as the cultural carrier,is rich in cultural connotations.Learning a foreign language means to learn its culture.Textbook contains cultural contents and provides the resources for students to learn English culture and native culture.Applying Zhang Hong’s Framework for Analyzing the Representation of Cultures in English Textbooks,this thesis makes a comparative analysis of cultural content between old(2006)and new version(2019)of required books of New Standard English for Senior High through quantitative and qualitative analysis(including text analysis,data analysis and comparative analysis).This research tries to answer the following research questions:(1)What are the overall distribution and weights of cultural contents in two versions of New Standard English for Senior High,respectively?(2)What are the similarities and differences of cultural contents in two versions of New Standard English for Senior High?The major findings are as follows:(1)As for the way of cultural representation,the weights of cultural content in the new version are generally higher than those in the old version.(2)For cultural topic,the cultural perspective is valued more in the new version than the old version.(3)Two versions pay the most attention to the cultural practice.(4)For cultural region,the proportion of Chinese culture is lower than that of target culture in the two versions.The Chinese culture aphasia exists in the reading passages.(5)For Chinese culture,the cultural practice still accounts for the most.Besides,content of cultural communities is scarce in the new version.Based on the findings,some implications are put forward for English teachers to use the textbooks scenically.Firstly,it’s suggested that teacher adds the content of cultural communities to make up the vacancy.Secondly,it is suggested that teacher take advantage of the ways for cultural presentation in the new version and design a series of context-based activities for students to explore the theme.Finally,due to the Chinese culture aphasia,it’s in urgent need for teachers to add the Chinese cultural content into classes.
