| With the proposal of the concept of “beautiful China” at the 18 th CPC National Congress,the construction of ecological civilization has risen to a historic height.As a social activity to cultivate people,education takes an important responsibility in the construction of ecological civilization in our country,while English education,due to its unique discipline characteristics,plays an irreplaceable role in cultivating talents with international vision and global ecological awareness.General Senior High School Curriculum Standards(2020)points out that raise student’s awareness of the ecological civilization and ecological education should be infiltrated into English classroom teaching.Ecological education is one of the indispensable contents in English teaching,which is conducive to improving students’ ecological awareness,shaping correct ecological behavior for students,and cultivating students into ecological man.The textbooks are the main carrier of ecological education,which play a decisive role in the cultivation of senior high school students’ ecological awareness.Therefore,the ecological education resources in high school English textbooks deserve more attention and reflection,and it is necessary to analyze and study ecological education resources in English textbooks.This study takes the reading materials in the FLTRP high school English compulsory textbooks(book1-book3)and selective compulsory textbooks(book1-book4)published in 2019 as research objects,and makes ecological discourse analysis from the perspective of attitude system within the framework of appraisal theory.This study uses a combination of quantitative statistics and qualitative analysis to analyze ecological discourse of reading materials in the FLTRP high school English textbooks,aiming to explore the situation with the use and distribution of attitude resources in the reading materials in the FLTRP high school English textbooks,the ecological orientation conveyed by attitude resources,as well as to investigate the effects of ecological discourse in the textbooks on students’ ecological awareness.This study is aim at answering the following three questions:(1)What’s the situation with the use and distribution of attitude resources in the reading materials under the thematic context of “Man and Nature” ?(2)What ecological orientation does the attitude resource in the reading materials under the thematic context of “Man and Nature”convey ?(3)What effects does ecological discourse in the FLTRP high school English textbooks have on students’ ecological awareness?The study takes both qualitative and quantitative analysis as research methods.The data collected through textbooks analysis and questionnaire is processed and analyzed with the help of Excel,Questionnaire Star and IBM SPSS Statistics 26.0.The major findings are as follows:1)The proportion of positive attitude resources are much larger than that of negative attitude resources.In whole attitude resources,appreciation resources account for the largest proportion,affect resources occupy the second largest proportion and judgement resources take up the smallest proportion.2)There are three types of ecological orientation in the reading materials,namely,ecological beneficial orientation,ecological destructive orientation and ecological ambivalent orientation.Ecological beneficial orientation in the reading materials is mainly conveyed through the use of positive attitude resources in sentences and texts;ecological destructive orientation is conveyed through the use of negative attitude resources in sentences and texts;while ecological ambivalent orientation is conveyed through the use of positive and negative attitude resources in sentences and texts.Among them,the proportion of ecological beneficial orientation is the largest,followed by ecological ambivalent orientation and ecological destructive orientation is the least.3)Students are satisfied with the three types of ecological discourse in the textbooks,and most of students like ecological beneficial discourse in the textbooks,there is a small part of students like ecological ambivalent discourse and ecological destructive discourse.The survey results show that ecological beneficial discourse has a positive impact on students’ ecological awareness,while some ecological ambivalent discourse and ecological destructive discourse have a negative impact on students’ ecological awareness.The purpose of this study is to provide a new research method for ecological discourse analysis,and to enhance students’ attention to ecological environment and improve their ecological awareness.This study also provides some suggestions for textbook compilers to improve English textbooks in the future,which is helpful for teachers to use textbooks to convey the idea of ecological civilization and students to form correct ecological values. |
