A Report On The C-E Translation Of Wuhan Municipal Goernment Work Report In 2021 Under The Skopos Theory

This is a C-E translation practice report based on the translation practice of Wuhan Municipal Government Work Report in 2021.The government work report mainly introduces Wuhan’s achievements in 2020 and its future development plans,so that readers can fully understand the current development situation and future development trend of the city.Based on Skopos Theory,this practice report reflects on the problems and solutions encountered in the process of translation,and then summarizes the translator’ gains and shortcomings of from this translation practice,aiming at providing experience and strategies for other translators when translating relevant political documents.First,this practice report analyzes some textual features of the source text.At the lexical level,there are abbreviations,culture-loaded words and high-frequency words;at the syntactic level,there are loads of zero-subject sentences and complex sentences;at the discourse level,titles and subtitles are closely related,involving a wide range of background knowledge,data,and objective and rigorous content.In view of the aforementioned characteristics,by combining the parallel text,network resources and other tools,the translator translated Wuhan Municipal Government Work Report in 2021 from Chinese into English and summarized the corresponding strategies.In the translation practice,three main principles of the Skopos Theory were applied to guide the translation practice.In terms of the Skopos rule,the translator uses literal translation strategy to translate cultural-loaded words;the translator uses the literal translation strategy with annotation method to translate abbreviations.As for the coherence rule,the translator increases the readability and acceptability of the translation by adding subjects and cohesive devices,reconstructing long and difficult sentences,and omitting unnecessary words.In terms of the fidelity rule,the translator avoids distorting the original meaning and chooses accurate vocabulary to achieve the unity of content between the translation and the original text in content.Through this translation practice,the translator further deepens his understanding of the Skopos Theory: It breaks through the shackles of the equivalence theory,studies and analyzes translation from the translator’s perspective,and constantly expands the horizon of the translation field.Through this practice,the translator has gradually mastered the use of various translation aids to improve the efficiency and quality of translation.It is also hoped that the findings of this study will have some referential significance for those who are engaged in the translation of government work reports.
