A Report On E-C Translation Of The Last Cuentista(Excerpt) Under The Guidance Of Reception Theory

The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera,a renowned writer of children’s literature,tells the story of a young girl named Petra in an easy-to-understand text.The book won the2022 Newbery Medal for Children’s Literature.It contains thirty chapters,of which chapters one to seven are used as practice material for this report.High-quality translations of children’s literature can provide a new and colorful literary world for children to explore and experience.And this requires translators to feel childlike innocence from a child’s perspective in translation.Since the translation of children’s literature serves children,its values should be children-oriented.Children-oriented principle emphasizes that children’s literature must be children-centered.It means that children’s literature should be consistent with children’s cognitive and receptive abilities,and must meet children’s emotional and aesthetic needs while also playing an active role in education and guidance.Guided by Hans Robert Jauss’ s reception theory,this practice fully considers children’s cognitive level,thinking mode,language ability and expression habits,and expresses the thoughts and contents of the source text from the perspective of children readers.It also adopts some translation skills and strategies,such as amplification,division,conversion and free translation,so as to accurately translate onomatopoeia,reduplication,long and complex sentences and figurative sentences,making the translation more acceptable to children’s readers.This report finds that the reception theory can play a guiding role in the translation of children’s literature,especially in the translation of onomatopoeia,reduplicated words,long and complex sentences and figurative sentences,which is conducive to solving the problems that have arisen in previous translations of children’s literature.
