This report is a translation practice report based on Chapter 7,8 and 9 of Take Me Apart written by Sara·Sligar. This work is a mystery novel, which tells the story of Miranda Brand,a famous photographer, who died mysteriously at the peak of her career and caused an uproar.Decades later, his son Theo hired the heroine Kate to archive his mother’s works.Kate accidentally saw Miranda’s diary and found that the whole thing was clouded with doubts, and a story about art, power and disease began. The author shows exquisite skills and techniques in language style, character creation, psychological description and so on.In particular, the narrative method of inserting narration makes the text fascinating and makes readers or viewers feel as if they were there.Reception aesthetics theory is a literary criticism theory founded by Hans Robert Jauss and Iser, scholars of Constantine school in Federal Germany in the late 1960s.The core of reception aesthetics is to translate based on the audience and the reception. The concept of “the horizon of expectations” was creatively put forward, which promoted the position of readers.Reception aesthetics also opposes the “text-centered theory” and advocates the “reader-centered theory”.The translator intends to take the reception aesthetics theory as the guide, take the reader as the center, and discuss long and complex sentences from two aspects of vocabulary and syntax. At the lexical level, the translator mainly adopts translation methods such as amplification and conversion. At the syntactic level, translation methods such as free translation and reorganization are mainly adopted to make the sentences smoother and more authentic, help readers to participate in the reconstruction of text meaning, and make the translation more in line with readers’ “horizon of expectations”.The translator claims that reception aesthetics has guiding significance for mystery novel’s translation practice, and hopes that this translation practice will provide some reference value for the translation of long and complex sentences in mystery novels in the future.
