| Book reviews have a significant impact on information exchange, economic efficiency and cultural communication. The New York Times Book Review(NYTBR),which has a126-year history, has been esteemed as a “Bible” by American publishers and book fans, exerting considerable influence worldwide. Therefore, the translation practice of the New York Times Book Review has practical and theoretical significance. In this report, the translation practice of The New York Times Book Review(2019-2022)for memoirs is conducted via the perspective of contextual adaptation of adaptation theory. The linguistic characteristics of the selected text include widely-applied long sentences, flexible sentence structures in which the reviewers would insert quotation randomly from the source text memoirs and professional culture-loaded words. In view of the above language characteristics, the translator adopts different translation methods and skills based on linguistic adaptation and communicative adaptation.Accordingly, because of the differences in cohesion, collocation and expression habits between Chinese and English, the translator mainly adopts amplification, division, restructuring and free translation to adapt to the linguistic characteristics of the target language,so as to make it easy for target readers to understand and accept the translation.Regarding communicative context, since the reviewers, main characters in memoirs and target readers differ in the physical world, mental world and social world, the translator should adopt annotation and amplification to reduce the reading frustration of target readers as well as expand their vision, thus achieving communicative effect.Theoretically, this translation practice proves that Verschueren’s adaptation theory provides directive significance for book review translation.Practically, translations of book review for memoirs can also offer reference and excellent examples for domestic book review circle. |
