Abstract/Summary:
Carrying unique urban memories and collective emotions, historic and cultural districts are an important part of urban cultural heritage and a key source of urban tourism attractiveness. In modern society, historical and cultural districts can bridge the interpersonal alienation and the separation of human emotions caused by urbanization and modernity, and become an important place for urban residents to relieve pressure and construct identity. However, with the continuous development of modern consumer society, the driving force for the preservation and renewal of historical and cultural districts has shifted to cultural tourism and commercial development, which has destroyed the bond between the historical environment and residents, causing scholars from all walks of life to reflect on and discuss the social value of historical and cultural districts. Therefore,it is urgent to value residents as the main users of urban space, deepen the emotional connection between historical and cultural districts and residents, and seek effective ways to express and develop the multiple values of districts.Facing the change of human-land relationship induced by the tourism development of historical and cultural districts, the study that based on place theory introduces a Cognition-Affect-Behavior theoretical model, takes the perception and experience of urban residents as the research object.Specifically,it takes the perception of placeness as the cognitive factor, takes nostalgia and place attachment as the emotional variable, and takes recreation behavior intention as the behavior tendency to construct the theoretical research model of residents’ recreation behavior in urban historical and cultural districts. The historical and cultural district of Wanshou Temple in Nanchang was selected as a case study.Data were collected through online questionnaires and field surveys. The overall characteristics and difference characteristics of urban residents’ place perception, nostalgia, place attachment and recreational behavior intention of historical and cultural districts were analyzed. The structural equation model was used to explore the relationship between variables, and the driving mechanism of recreational behavior of Nanchang residents’ historical and cultural districts from the perspective of place theory was clarified. The conclusions of this thesis mainly include.(1)The study explores the dimensions of residents’ perception of placeness about historical and cultural districts. The empirical test results show that the perception of placeness has the structural characteristics of four dimensions: architectural style, historical culture, life atmosphere and commercial culture, which provides reference for the development of placeness localization scale.(2)The emotional relationship between people and place is an important factor restricting the recreation vitality of urban historical and cultural districts. The empirical analysis of typical cases reveals that,on the one hand, placeness and place attachment of recreationists are important recreational attraction factors, which have a significant direct positive impact on the recreational behavior intention of urban residents, and place attachment has a stronger positive effect on recreational behavior intention, which may be the dominant factor to predict residents’ recreational behavior, while nostalgia has a significant negative impact on recreational behavior. On the other hand, the study confirms that the perception of placeness is the antecedent of nostalgia, and nostalgia is the antecedent of place attachment. At the same time, nostalgia has a complete mediating effect in the relationship between the perception of placeness and place attachment. In addition, the driving mechanism of residents’ recreational behavior in Wanshou Temple in Nanchang historical and cultural district presents a Cognitive-Affective-Behavior mode,in which individuals can be stimulated through the influence of ‘the perception of placeness → nostalgia → place attachment → recreational behavior intention’.(3)The social value of historical and cultural districts emphasizes the importance of the historical environment to local residents in daily life, which is mainly manifested in the fact that the physical space and spiritual space of the district can provide a foundation for local uniqueness, individual memory and emotions, urban recreation function, social interaction, etc.Based on the above conclusions, this study puts forward three suggestions for the development and management of urban historical and cultural districts: the first is to enrich the locality of districts based on local culture;the second is to improve the quality of recreation experience with emotional experience as the core. The third is to focus on enhancing the stickiness of tourism with the guidance of social value.
