Research On The Origin Of Light-Expression Techniques In Georges Seurat’s Painting

Georges Seurat is linked with labels such as “Pointillism” and “the leader of Neo-Impressionism” when he is mentioned in Western art history,while the artist is factually one of those who are adept at absorbing the achievements of his predecessors and integrating them into his artistic language system,thus transforming them into his unique and independent creation.Insufficient Seurat studies are seen in China,despite the country’s academia having been gradually deepening the research on the artist in recent years.The reason may be the restrictions relating to cultural,regional,and resource divisions.In terms of depth and breadth,the current Chinese research on Seurat,although some of them are rich in academic and technicality,are yet to reach an equivalent height of Western researchers.Therefore,in the face of such a deficiency in the domestic Seurat research,this dissertation,utilizing accessible resources as much as possible,is dedicated to offering a summarizing conclusion of the artist’s unique understanding of lights and its origin of painting theories and practices.Above,Seurat is particularly talented at learning the essence of his predecessors’ work.Accordingly,with the methodology of literature analysis,this dissertation investigates,compares,dissects,and demonstrates how the artist studied and absorbed the accomplishments of his forerunners through an understanding of lights.With an attempt to confirm Seurat’s specific objects for reference and absorption,this dissertation also clarifies the artist’s source of traditions from Classical art to social life in the 19 th Century.At the same time,this research tries to sort out Seurat’s diverse and complex inheritance relationship and cultural connections with estheticians,scientists,artist Eugène Delacroix,and Impressionist painters,to elaborate the methodology of Seurat’s study of his precursors.Through this explorational summarization,the dissertation is projected to bring inspiration and guidance in coping with the crisis of contemporary painting in the era of artificial intelligence(AI).
