Both the Mandarin Dictionary and the Modern Chinese Dictionary have occupied important positions in the long history of language dictionaries over the past century and are important nodes in the genealogy of modern Chinese language dictionaries. They form an important chain in the external genealogy of language dictionaries over the past century, and the revisions and refinements between editions within the Modern Chinese Dictionary constitute the internal genealogy of language dictionaries. The changes in the stylistic color of words over the last hundred years can reflect changes in the nation’s communicative elegance. The Iwami Dictionary of Chinese features a comprehensive list of stylistic colors and serves as a reference to explore the development of stylistic color words in internal and external genealogical dictionaries. This article uses the words clearly marked 〈书〉〈口〉〈方〉 in the Modern Chinese Dictionary as the closed domain, the Iwami Dictionary of Chinese as the reference, and the Mandarin Dictionary, the Modern Chinese Dictionary(1st Edition),and the Modern Chinese Dictionary(7th Edition)as the objects of study. The dictionary archaeological study explores the external genealogy of modern Chinese language dictionaries,"The Mandarin Dictionary and the Dictionary of Modern Chinese," and the internal genealogy of the dictionary,"Modern Chinese Dictionary(1st Edition)and Modern Chinese Dictionary(7th Edition)," the evolution of the development of stylistic color words,as well as the position of the Mandarin Dictionary and the Modern Chinese Dictionary in the genealogy of modern Chinese language dictionaries. The paper mainly consists of five sections:The first part is the introduction. This part mainly explains the purpose and significance of this paper, reviews relevant studies, and discusses the research object and the research method. The second part is a reference to stylistic color marking: the Iwami Chinese Dictionary. This part provides quantitative statistics on the distribution of words and phrases collected in the Iwami Chinese Dictionary and introduces the content features and academic value of the dictionary, mainly focusing on material typicality, phonology, and interpretation.Additionally, this part describes the distribution of meaning categories for written and spoken color words collected in the Iwami Chinese Dictionary, the Mandarin Dictionary, and the Modern Chinese Dictionary(1st Edition),as well as the written and spoken color words collected in the Iwami Chinese Dictionary, the Modern Chinese Dictionary(1st Edition),and the Modern Chinese Dictionary(7th Edition). The third part is the development of the stylistic colors of the words collected in the Mandarin Dictionary and the Modern Chinese Dictionary(1st Edition). This part presents a quantitative analysis of the stylistic coloration of words included in the external genealogy of the Mandarin Dictionary and the Modern Chinese Dictionary(1st Edition)and explores the reasons for the development of stylistic coloration of words included in the dictionaries at this stage. It considers factors such as syllable count, neutral tone and retroflex vowels, and lexical changes in conjunction with the contemporaneous corpus. The fourth part is the development of the stylistic colors of the words included in the Modern Chinese Dictionary(1st Edition)and the Modern Chinese Dictionary(7th Edition). This part presents a quantitative analysis of the development of the stylistic colors of the words collected in the internal genealogy of the Modern Chinese Dictionary(1st Edition)and the Modern Chinese Dictionary(7th Edition)and investigates the changes in word labeling and their causes. At the same time, the development of the stylistic color of the words collected in the two dictionaries is explored in relation to the corpus of the same period. The fifth part discusses the characteristics and rules of the evolution of stylistic colors in words included in modern Chinese language dictionaries from three perspectives: the dictionary history perspective, the lexical history perspective, and extended thinking.
