Information Processing In Simulated Consecutive Interpreting

The process of interpreting can be seen as information processing with the characteristics of instantaneity.Interpreters need to understand,store,extract and transform the received information,and express the information of the source language to the audience in a timely and accurate manner consistent with the logic of the target language.Specifically,interpreting information processing can also be considered as information transmission,including listening,analysis and output.Furthermore,studying interpreting information processing is of positive significance to language extraction,target language reconstruction and interpreting quality improvement.Based on the above,this practice,taking the documentary “Materia Medica in Southern Yunnan” as the interpreting material and combining it with typical cases,discusses the difficulties and solutions of information processing in simulated consecutive interpreting.This report analyzes the difficulties in this practice based on the interpreting information processing and tries to put forward corresponding solutions with the specific case,in which the difficulties in interpreting can be fall into three categories.The first is the difficulties when interpreting specific terms,including terms,idioms and colloquialisms.The second is special sentence patterns,covering topic sentence patterns and repetitive sentence patterns.And the last is caused by frequent turn-taking,including turn-taking between dialogues and turn-taking between dialogues and narrations.Given the three types of information processing difficulties,this practice comes up with corresponding solutions.For the first difficulties,the interpreter infers the meaning of terms according to the context and uses the discourse function to simplify or add idioms and colloquialisms.For the second difficulties,the interpreter identifies and refines the subject of the topic sentence to determine the sentence structure of the target language,and omits the repetitive sentences to integrate the sentence structure of the target language.And for the last difficulties,the solutions are the combination of turns between dialogues to enhance the clarity of the target language information and the addition of turns between dialogues and narrations to achieve the coherence of the target language information.These case studies show that the solutions proposed by the interpreter can help information processing and improve the interpreting quality.It is hoped that the information processing methods related to vocabulary,sentence patterns,and turn-taking proposed in this practice can provide a reference for similar interpreting practices.
