| Vocabulary is one of the three major elements of English learning and serves as the foundation for students to learn English. The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 edition)states that primary school students should initially master about 500 words and be able to communicate and express themselves on specific topics. It can be seen that vocabulary is of significance for English learning at the elementary level. However, the author found that vocabulary has become an impediment for many students to learn English well, especially in a rural elementary school where the author works. The teachers lack the awareness of guiding students to pay attention to the intrinsic connection between pronunciation and spelling.Meanwhile they still use pretty traditional and mechanical methods of teaching vocabulary, such as leading students to imitate them, listening to the recordings and reading after them, assigning words to recite after class and dictating in class.Furthermore, there are many problems brought by this teaching situation.Students’ English vocabulary learning is time-consuming and ineffective. They can not remember the pronunciation of words and have even more difficulties in spelling them.As a result, they are less interested in learning English. In view of this situation, the author tries to apply Phonics in daily English vocabulary teaching.Phonics,a way of learning English vocabulary that enables students to establish the correspondence between letters or letter combinations and word pronunciation, can help students improve the efficiency of vocabulary learning.By means of questionnaires, interviews and tests, this study selects two classes of Grade5 in L Primary School in Dalian as the experimental class(EC)and control class(CC)respectively for a teaching experiment, through which three questions are intended to be answered: 1.What effect does Phonics have on rural pupils’ English word ability? 2.What effect does Phonics have on rural pupils’ English word spelling ability? 3.What effect does Phonics have on rural pupils’ English word learning interest?By analyzing, comparing and sorting out the data collected before and after the experiment,it can be found that the application of Phonics can well improve the English vocabulary reading and spelling abilities of primary school students in rural areas,as well as can spark their interest in English vocabulary learning. This study analyses the effects of Phonics on English vocabulary reading and spelling abilities, and learning interest of primary school students in rural areas,in the hope that it will bring some insights into the teaching methods of English vocabulary in rural primary schools. |
