Vocabulary is the basis of English learning,which is pretty important for English learners.According to the English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011-year Edition),primary school students should reach the second level of vocabulary.However,vocabulary teaching in China is not perfect enough due to the serious "time-consuming and inefficient" phenomenon.Consequently,students’ vocabulary level can not meet the requirements of the English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education.Due to the teaching conditions,teachers,teaching materials,family environment,students themselves and some other reasons,"time-consuming and inefficient"phenomenon in vocabulary learning is present as well in the author’s school,especially for the students of Grade 4.Phonics is especially suitable for primary school students’ vocabulary learning,and is a way better than other methods,such as learning by rote or international phonetic alphabet.However,the extensive research abroad on phonics is not completely suitable for domestic students.Furthermore,there is a lack of systematic research on the vocabulary of textbooks in China.Therefore,phonics has not been widely used to solve the problems of students’ vocabulary learning.In view of this,it is necessary to explore a new method to teach phonics which is more suitable for Chinese primary school students,in order to lighten the burden of vocabulary teaching and learning as a reference for teachers and students.To solve the problem of vocabulary teaching and learning,according to the theory of phonics and phonogram,the author tries to establish a phonogram chart of the words listed in The New Standard English(Starting from Grade 3)Grade 4 Volume 2,with the help of corpus.According to the concept and classification of phonics,with the help of the phonogram chart,the author has done a new research of phonics.Based on the research,the author attempts to answer the following three questions:(1)How to establish a phonogram chart based on the textbook in use with the help of phonics?(2)Can the spelling speed and accuracy of the students in the experimental class be effectively improved after using the new way of phonics to carry out vocabulary teaching?(3)What are the differences between the experimental class and the controlled class in the speed and accuracy of spelling?Two parallel classes of Grade 4 in Shouguang G primary school were taken as the research objects.The experiment was carried out for 17 weeks.Before,during and after the experiment,the author collected the questionnaires and tests about spelling speed and accuracy.Besides,the author collected the final examination papers of the first semester and the second semester.Afterwards,through analyzing and discussing the data of the tests,the final examination papers and the questionnaires,the author found that:Firstly,after using the new way of phonics to carry out vocabulary teaching,the spelling speed and accuracy of the students in the experimental class were effectively improved.Secondly,compared with the controlled class,the spelling speed and accuracy of the students in the experimental class were significantly improved.Therefore,with the help of the phonogram chart,phonics is effective to improve the speed and accuracy of students’ vocabulary spelling. |
