The translation practice of this report is selected from the first and second chapters of Susan Denham Wade’s book A History of Seeing in Eleven Inventions,with a total translation of more than 32000 words.The book mainly describes eleven major visionrelated inventions,each of which represents a turning point in the history of vision.Its content is easy to understand,and it is provided with graphic and text explanations,which is very interesting and popular with the majority of readers.And this work has not been translated in China,so it is worth translating and studying.The description of source materials,the explanation of the procedure for translation,and the analysis and conclusion of translation instances are all included in this practice report for English to Chinese translation.The translator laid out and looked into numerous translation examples during the translation process using Li Changshuan’s CEA framework,and further discussed the translation of popular science texts from the following viewpoints:comprehension,expression,and adaptation.Comprehension is the first step in translation,which is mainly reflected in the understanding of the medical and archaeological background knowledge of the source text design,the author’s intention,and the content of the original text in this project;On the basis of a thorough understanding of the source text,a series of translation strategies such as interpretive translation and zero translation are used to clearly convey the information that the original text intends to convey to the readers;Finally,it is crucial to achieve adaptation when translating,as the translator needs to make appropriate adjustments to the translation,such as handling some special sentence structures in the original text,in order for the target readers of the translation to be able to embrace the same point of view as that of the primary readers and obtain a pleasurable reading experience.
