The memoir is a literary genre that holds significant importance in researching and studying specific individuals or historical periods, and possesses both literary and aesthetic value. In this report, the translator and author(hereinafter referred to as the translator)chose The Child Who Never Grew from Pearl S.Buck as the research object, and took Reiss’ s text typology from German functionalist theory as the theoretical framework. The primary focus of this report is to highlight methods and techniques used in translating memoirs while also expressing the translator’s personal experiences, achievements, inspirations during the translation process. The Child Who Never Grew is a poignant memoir by Pearl S.Buck about her experience as a mother raising her daughter who had congenital retardation. The book is written in a smooth, emotional style that captures the readers’ attention. The translator believes that the main goal of translating literary works like this memoir is to meet the needs of target readers and help them understand and appreciate the text.Additionally, the translation should aim to foster empathy between readers and the author by acting as a bridge connecting them both.A translator acts as a mediator between the author and readers, understanding and empathizing with both parties. They must comprehend the author’s intentions while also considering how the readers will interpret the text. Therefore,in this study, the Reiss’ s text typology from German functionalist theory was chosen as a theoretical framework. This approach is highly valuable for text classification and translation, particularly in relation to Reiss’ s text typology classification theory. The study provides a detailed analysis of the translation of informative, expressive, and operative texts with the aim of exploring and summarizing practical methods and techniques for translating memoirs.Ultimately, this research aims to offer useful references and suggestions for E-C translations of memoirs and other literary works.
