In the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,Chinese society was in dire need of renewal in all areas. At this time, the baton of education between the old and the new in China was struggling to find a reliable candidate who could take up the baton.New talents with new knowledge and ideas were the candidates to take up this important task. But such new talents were not yet available in China at that time. Therefore,in order to cultivate such new talents, the government initiated a large number of aspiring young people to travel across the ocean to study. This was the reason for the huge wave of enthusiasm for studying in Japan.Jiangsu and Zhejiang, the "province of culture and education",was no exception, and even became the pivot of the national movement to study in Japan. Both those who were studying in Japan and those who had returned hometown from their studies in Jiangsu and Zhejiang made a significant impact on the development of new-style schools in their hometowns and even nationwide.Unfortunately,no research has been carried out on the contribution of the students to the development of the new-style schools in Jiangsu and Zhejiang.Based on this, this thesis intends to conduct a systematic study of the development of the new-style schools by using documentary, historical and case-study methods, focusing on the specific impact of this group on the founding of the new-style schools and the changes in education to make an objective historical assessment. The thesis is mainly divided into six parts:The first part of the thesis is “The historical background of the flourishing of the movement to study in Japan in Jiangsu and Zhejiang during the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China”.The historical background of the flourishing movement to study in Japan in Jiangsu and Zhejiang at the time is examined mainly from three aspects: the economic, cultural and social foundations of the region. The second part is "What students in Jiangsu and Zhejiang saw and heard during their study in Japan in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China".The exposure to advanced educational systems and concepts such as the development of normal education, the emphasis on girls’ education, and the promotion of physical education,as well as the concrete perception and experience of education in Japanese schools during the period of study in Japan, had a great impact on the activities of students from Jiangsu and Zhejiang who studied in Japan in the new-style school,so these insights will be discussed in this section. The third section is on the creation of new-style schools by students from Jiangsu and Zhejiang who had studied(or were studying)in Japan in the late Qing and early Ming dynasties. This section focuses on the creation and management of three types of new-style schools: normal schools,new-style schools for girls and sports schools. The fourth section is devoted to “Students from Jiangsu and Zhejiang who studied(or were studying)in Japan in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China and the educational changes in the new-style schools”.This section examines four perspectives:Curriculum and materials, teaching methods, educational activities and management styles,to illustrate the practical impact of this group on the educational changes in the new-style schools of the time. The fifth section is a case study of students had studied(or were studying)in Japan and the development of new-style schools in Jiangsu and Zhejiang. This section presents a case study of Jing Hengyi and the development of the two levels of teacher training colleges in Zhejiang and later the Zhejiang First Normal School. The sixth section is entitled “Historical contributions and reflections on the development of New-style Schools by students who had studied(or were studying)in Japan in Jiangsu and Zhejiang in the late Qing and early republican periods”.Firstly,it sort outs and summarizes the specific contributions made by students who studied in Japan in Jiangsu and Zhejiang to the development of new-style schools. Then,it reflects on the problems arising from the participation of students who studied in Japan in the development of new-style schools in Jiangsu and Zhejiang. |
