English reading teaching is an important means to cultivate English core literacy.However,at present,English reading teaching in China still focuses on the superficial language knowledge and neglects the deeper understanding of the reading texts,which leads to the failure to cultivate students’ reading ability and core literacy accordingly.The schema is a cognitive structure in individual’s brains,which can help students understand the reading text deeply.Therefore,based on the perspective of English reading,this study classifies the schema into three categories: linguistic schema,content schema and formal schema,and tries to use the modern information technology to present the abstract schema in a visual way,so as to optimize the activation and construction path of schema,improve students’ reading ability,and implement the cultivation of core literacy.Based on this,this study mainly uses literature research method,questionnaire survey method,test method and interview method to analyze the basic methods,procedures and notes of applying schema visualization in English reading teaching,and put them into teaching practice to conduct an empirical study on its teaching effect.Specifically,the following work was done:First of all,this study uses the literature research method to introduce the general background and the current status of research on schema and visualization in English reading teaching.Based on it,this study identifies the problem to be solved and makes a preliminary plan of the research method to be used.Secondly,This study defines the concept of the "schema" in the view of English reading.And with the help of the concepts of "knowledge visualization" and "thinking visualization",the definition of "schema visualization" is elaborated.In addition,this section also presents the theoretical basis of this study:Dell’s "tower of experience";dual coding theory;and cognitive information processing theory.Thirdly,based on the relevant theoretical foundations and principles of the teaching model,a high school English reading teaching model with schema visualization is constructed.The teaching objectives,teaching realization conditions,operation procedures and teaching evaluation under this reading model are also elaborated.Fourthly,two parallel classes in the second year of senior high school in Zhangzhou were selected as the experimental subjects,and a semester-long teaching experiment was conducted and the following work was done:(1)A questionnaire was used to understand students’ knowledge and use of visualization tools,and a visualization tools learning section was created in the "Super Star Learning" teaching platform.(2)The Mann Whitney test was used to calculate the differences in total scores of the experimental class and the control class,and there was a progressive significance in the post test scores(P=0.001<0.05),which can be concluded that the use of the schema visualization in English reading teaching can improve students’ reading performance.(3)Likewise,the Mann-Whitney test was used to calculate the significance of the experimental and control classes’ reading skills of identification and extraction,analysis and summary on the post test(P=0.008<0.05).However,the significance of the post test of judging and evaluating skills was weak(P=0.753>0.05).It can be concluded that the use of schema visualization in English reading teaching has a significant effect on the development and improvement of students’ reading skills of identifying and extracting,analyzing and summarizing,but not on the development of students’ reading skills of judging and evaluating.(4)The interviews revealed that students showed positive attitudes toward the schema visualization-based English reading teaching model.All in all,the schema visualization-based English reading teaching model can satisfy the early preconceptions of the study to a certain extent and has certain practical application value.However,due to the subjective and objective reasons such as short teaching experiment time and small experimental sample,this study still has certain defects to be further researched.
