Reading is a crucial part in language teaching,and improving reading ability has long become an indispensable key content in English teaching.But now reading has become a big problem for many high school students.A large number of studies on English reading show that an important reason for misunderstanding the content of the article is the lack of knowledge of English cultural background.The traditional reading teaching emphasizes that the focus of reading is on teaching words,sentences and grammar,ignoring the background knowledge related to the reading materials in the reader’s mind,that is,the construction,activation,application and consolidation of schema.Based on this,this study will analyze the practical application of acculturation based on schema theory in high school English reading teaching.Based on schema theory and cross-cultural communication theory,this study combines the relevant research results at home and abroad,adopts empirical research and focuses on the following three research questions:1.What effects does schema-based acculturation have on high school students’ English reading attitudes?2.What effects does schema-based acculturation have on high school students’ English reading strategies?3.What effects does schema-based acculturation have on high school students’ English reading ability?The subject were two parallel classes in Grade One from a high school in Yueyang and the research instruments included reading tests,questionaires and interviews.In the experimental class,the teacher adopted acculturation based on schema theory in the reading class,and used the traditional reading teaching method.The whole experiment were completed within 16 weeks,during which two reading tests were conducted.At the end of the experiment,the collected reading scores and questionnaire data were systematically analyzed and discussed through SPSS 23.0software.The findings are as follows:(1)questionnaire data and interview results show that the vast majority of students can actively accept the acculturation based on schema theory.(2)Acculturation based on schema theory has a positive impact on students’ reading strategies.(3)In the reading tests at the end of the experiment,there is a significant difference in the English reading comprehension scores between the experimental class and the control class(p=.001 < 0.05),which shows that the acculturation based on schema theory can effectively improve students’ English reading ability.The study implies that the acculturation based on schema theory has important practical significance and reference value for high school English reading teaching.In view of this research conclusion,the researcher put forward some suggestions and prospects for high school English reading teaching and also brought some enlightenment to its development.
