| With the rapid growth of the “Air Silk Road” construction and the increasing demand on air transportation capacity, the popularization and training of basic electrical knowledge on the maintenance of aviation equipment has become one of the important work tasks of civil aviation companies. This translation practice report is based on the source text of Maintenance Manual for Aircraft Electrical Fundamentals distributed by Henan Civil Aviation Development & Investment Group, mainly for the company’s employees to promote and train the basic knowledge and skills of aircraft electrical maintenance. The mode of machine translation(MT)plus post-editing(PE)is adopted in this translation practice report,in which Baidu and Deep L is selected as the translation tools, the corresponding PE strategies are proposed based on theory of translation shifts after labeling, categorizing and post-editing the errors in the initial raw MT output. This report consists of five chapters. The first chapter is the brief introduction to the origin, background and significance of this translation project. The second chapter is the description of translation procedure, including the analysis of source text and selection of MT platforms in pre-translation,general practice design in whiletranslation and proofreading phases in post-translation.The third chapter serves as the theoretical framework, which reviews and summarizes MT error categorizations based on multidimensional standards of MT quality, theory of translation shifts, and PE research guided by this theory. The fourth chapter is the case analysis, according to the shifting idea and types from theory of translation shifts, the typical cases of MT output are post-edited by shifting strategies at lexical, syntactical and textual levels: at lexical level, due to omission, incorrect technical terms and mistranslation that frequently occur in MT output, the strategies of supplementing the omitted original words, revising mistranslated technical terms and shifting different parts of speech are used for semantic integrity, word selection and collocation;at syntactical level,in view of the difference in logical relation structure and positional order of sentence components between English and Chinese, the translation strategies of shifting from passive to active voice, reversing the order of adverbial clauses and optimizing logical organizations are applied in long complicated sentences to solve the problems of improper order, logical confusion and poor readability in MT output;at textual level, the necessary additions and formatting adjustments are made for the fluency and clarity of the text in terms of textual cohesion and formatting unification. The fifth chapter is the conclusion, combined with translation practice process and potential improvements, the findings and implications are proposed by the author. |
