Under the guidance of the new curriculum reform, senior English emphasizes student-centered learning, shifts from “teaching students knowledge” to “teaching students to learn” and develop students’ learning ability. In addition, teachers should pay more attention to the teaching process while paying attention to the teaching results,so that students can actively participate in the classroom and become the master of learning. However, the current high school English reading teaching is still receptive teaching, with much lecturing by teachers and less classroom participation by students. Therefore,in view of the problems in English reading teaching and the requirements of the curriculum standards, this paper tries to apply a local teaching model in China—the PAD class to high school English reading teaching. The PAD class was proposed by Professor Zhang Xuexin in 2014,emphasizing the combination of the traditional lecture-based classroom with the Western discussion-based classroom, where students are the subject of classroom learning, which has an impact on improving students’ classroom participation.Based on this, this study uses the PAD class in high school English reading teaching to explore its effectiveness so as to update teachers’ teaching concepts, improve students’ classroom participation, and enhance students’ reading achievement. The study explored two main research questions:(1)How does the application of the PAD class affect senior high school students’ participation in English reading classroom?(2)How does the application of the PAD class affect senior high school students’ English reading level? In this study, two classes were selected in a high school in Yan’an City.During the experiment period,50 students in the experimental class adopted the PAD class, and 52 students in the control class adopted the conventional English reading teaching model. The teacher designed the teaching of English reading materials based on the PAD class for Compulsory 1 of the People’s Education Press, taking into account the difficulty of the reading text, students’ reading levels and teaching purposes, etc. The teaching process mainly consists of teachers’ lectures, students’ independent study, group discussion.Through the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods such as pre-test and post-test,questionnaire and interview, this paper discusses the teaching effect of the PAD class applied to English reading.Firstly, four English teachers were interviewed to explore the feasibility of applying the PAD class to English reading teaching;secondly, reading pre-tests were conducted in two classes, and the scores show that there was no significant difference between the two classes, which could be used as the research object of this experiment. One class was randomly selected as the experimental class. Then distribute questionnaires to the experimental class to find out the current situation of students’ participation in the classroom. After the experiment, the experimental class and the control class were tested again;distribute the questionnaires to the experimental class and interview three students of different level in the experimental class.According to the results of the study, all the mean values of the students’ classroom participation increased, and the experimental class reading scores improved markedly, which indicates that the PAD class is not only effectively improve students’ participation in English reading classes, but also has a positive impact on students’ reading scores, and can be applied to high school English reading teaching as an effective teaching model. This study reveals that English teachers should continuously improve themselves in the process of using the PAD class, adequately prepare lessons, and accurately grasp the important and difficult points of teaching;at the same time, teachers should balance the roles of teachers and students and pay attention to students’ subjectivity;flexibly choose the PAD model and reasonably optimize the PAD class stage.Due to various subjective and objective factors, there are still some limitations and shortcomings in this study, and we hope that these shortcomings and regrets can be improved in the future teaching and research.
