Class participation refers to teachers and students’ way of psychological activityand level of behavior efforts, which includes behavior participation, cognitiveinvolvement and emotional involvement. Behavior participation means the effort levelof students’ behavior in the classroom, for example, class performance. Cognitiveinvolvement means students’ learning strategies in the class, which reflects their level ofthinking. Emotional involvement means students’ in-class emotional experience. Classparticipation, as an important part in English teaching, plays a vital role in promotinglanguage acquisition. Teachers put forward topics and invent activities, and if studentsactively take part in them, good teaching results will be achieved. This thesis organizes The Questionnaire of the Status of College Students’Participation in the Class. The thesis sets up dimensionalities based on the collectedinformation following the open-ended questionnaire. By summarizing the relevantresearch and analyzing evaluation tools, and with the reference of The Questionnaire ofStudents’ In-class Participation of Doc. Zengqi, this thesis finally comes to fivedimensionalities, that is, active participation, self-control passive participation, controlled passive participation, no participation and negative participation. Eachdimensionality is composed of6questions, so there are30questions in thequestionnaire. Tested subjects come from Liaoning University of International Businessand Economics,123freshmen,121sophomores,125juniors(369students altogether),among whom there are181males,187females,198liberal arts students and171science students. This thesis studies the status of students’ participation in the class at highervocational college. The study concludes that female students obviously excel male onesin the dimensionalities of active participation and self-control participation. From thecharacteristics of language development, most female students have a much betterability to control language than male ones. Hence, females like learning language morewhile males less. In addition, with the influence of Chinese traditional culture, femalesmore like to accept teachers’ advice and follow the rhythm of the class, that is, moreactive participation. In professional respect, except in the dimensionality of activeparticipation, science students participate more than liberal arts students, in otherdimensionalities, there is no obvious difference, because science students are relativelyactive, respond more quickly and like to express themselves while liberal arts studentslike thinking on their own. And, based on the status and the research result together with the writer’s own practical teaching experience, the writer puts forward the followingteaching strategies and educational advice. First, be familiar with the students and theirpersonalities to help them establish a feasible English goal. Second, adopt a diversity ofmechanisms to stimulate students’ interest in learning English. Third, enhance students’passion in English to increase their participation in English class. By adopting the abovemethod, more students could participate in English class so as to promote students’efficiency and effect in learning English at higher vocational college.
