The report selects the book A Biography of Lu Yao(chapter eight and chapter nine)written by Mr.Hou-fu as source text to carry out C-E translation practice.The selected chapters elaborate on the course of Chinese contemporary writer Lu Yao’s creation of The Ordinary World,presenting readers with a vivid and distinctive character and his spirit of literary creation.In view of the authenticity and literariness characteristics of biography,the present author adopts Skopos theory proposed by German functionalists as theoretical guidance,and combines Skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule to choose appropriate translation strategies.In the course of translation,the present author sorted out difficulties encountered from lexical level and syntactic level.At lexical level,it is mainly about the translation of four-character structures,culture-loaded words and dialects;at syntactic level,it is mainly about the translation of non-subject sentences,paratactic sentences and run-on sentences.In view of the above difficulties,the author adopts corresponding translation techniques in the light of Skopos theory to faithfully convey the original work and meanwhile take into account the readability and intelligibility of target text.Specifically,free translation,domestication and paraphrase are adopted at lexical level to convey cultural connotation of words;amplification,reorganization,combination and explicit of logical relationship are employed at syntactic level to enable translation comply with English expression habits.This report sheds light on the guiding significance of Skopos theory in biography translation and seeks to provide some inspiration and enlightenment for the translation of biographical literature. |
