Shangcheng County is located in the southeast corner of Henan Province and is a county under the jurisdiction of Xinyang City. Its eastern part intersects with Jinzhai County in Anhui Province, and its southern part is connected to Macheng City in Hubei Province. Both editions of atlas of Chinese Language believe that Shangcheng dialect belongs to Xinbeng section of Zhongyuan Mandarin. But the special geographical location leads to the transitional nature of Shangcheng dialect between Zhongyuan Mandarin and Jianghuai Mandarin.Previous scholars have also conducted relevant investigations and studies around Shangcheng dialect, but these studies mostly focus on a single dialect point in Shangcheng County, which is insufficient to reveal the common characteristics and individual differences within Shangcheng dialect. Therefore,on the basis of obtaining the speech materials of 19 towns and streets in Shangcheng County by means of field research and other methods, this paper, through a comparative study at the synchronic and diachronic levels, draws the internal commonalities and differences of Shangcheng’s speech, and obtains a deeper understanding of Shangcheng’s speech in the process of exploring the causes of differences. The introduction section introduces the overview of the mall, previous research results, and the general situation of this thesis.Firstly, introduce the geographical environment of the mall and its current administrative system, origin of its name, historical evolution, and significant population changes in history.Secondly,it is necessary to review and summarize previous research on the Xinbang dialect of Central Plains Mandarin, the Huangxiao dialect of Jianghuai Mandarin, and the Shangcheng dialect, pointing out the lack of comprehensive and systematic comparative research on the current Shangcheng dialect.Once again, discuss the significance of this thesis and the research methods adopted. Finally, introduce the survey points of this thesis and the relevant information of the speakers.Chapter 2 describes the phonetic systems of various representative dialect points in the shopping mall. The research focus of this article is to explore the internal differences in phonetics in Shangcheng dialect. Therefore, this chapter selects five representative points to describe the phonology based on the geographical distribution differences(mainly the differences in initial consonants)of Shangcheng dialect’s pronunciation, rhyme, and tone obtained from the survey. These five representative dialect points are Huangpo Village in Shangshiqiao Town,Shizhai Village in Fengji Town,Damuchang Village in Fushan Township,Yaobang Village in Guanmiao Town, and Wangchong Village in Changzhuyuan Township.Chapter 3 systematically compares the phonetics of various representative points, and describes the similarities and main differences in the initial consonants, finals, and tones of Shangcheng phonetics based on the comparison results. The differences in initial consonants include: the separation and combination of the ancient non Fu Feng consonant and the Xiaoxian consonant such as He Kou Yi and Er,the evolution of the initial consonant of the ancient Zhi Zhuang Zhang group, the evolution of the ancient Ying Yi consonant, and the evolution of the ancient Yun Yi consonant. The differences in vowels include: the present-day pronunciation of encountering, the present-day pronunciation of ancient hekou characters, the proliferation and detachment of [i] prepositions[(?)] The generation of quasi finals. The difference in tone is mainly reflected in the current pronunciation of ancient entering tone characters.Chapter 4 explores the reasons for the differences in geographical distribution of initials, finals, and tones in Shangcheng dialect.A phonetic system is a whole composed of initials, finals, and tones. The form presented by horizontal assembly will change according to the vertical replacement of the constituent elements. Both internal and external forces in the speech system will drive changes in the constituent elements. Therefore, this chapter mainly explores the evolution law of Shangcheng dialect speech by combining the internal and external factors that affect the development of speech.Chapter 5 explores the attribution of Shangcheng dialect. After clarifying the basis for the classification of dialect attribution, the typical characteristics of Shangcheng dialect are compared with Zhongyuan Mandarin and Jianghuai Mandarin, and the comparison results reveal that Shangcheng dialect is the result of the transition from Jianghuai Mandarin to Zhongyuan Mandarin. The conclusion section summarizes the various manifestations of internal differences in phonetics in Shangcheng dialect and the reasons for these differences, and proposes the shortcomings of this thesis.
