| The present report is a study on the conversion of part of speech in the English-Chinese translation of Hershey’s 2018 Sustainability Report, which typically falls into the category of business discourse. As a non-financial report for enterprises, the text is characterized by the use of formal words and formal style. With the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory and through case studies, this paper summarizes five types of part of speech conversion in English-Chinese translation,including:(1)When English nouns are derived from verbs with dynamic features,or are abstract nouns, they can be converted into Chinese verbs or adjectives.(2)When there are no equivalent verbs in Chinese, the English verbs can be converted into Chinese nouns and adverbs.(3)When the English adjectives carry active and dynamic meanings, they can be converted into verbs;when their modified words are converted in part of speech, the adjectives are supposed to be transformed accordingly.(4)When the words modified by English adverbs change in part of speech, the adverbs should be converted accordingly;when they are combined with linking verbs and have substantial meanings, they can be converted into Chinese verbs.(5)When English prepositions carry action tendency, they can be converted into Chinese verbs. The author hopes that the report can provide some reference for the English-Chinese translation of business texts, especially the translation of conversion of part of speech therein. |
